After a week of practicing with paint and brush the letters were painted onto the marble and then cut with a hammer and chisel.

		<description>The problem statement for my Bachelor project was with the theme "expansion".
I wanted to look closer at expansion in type. I decided to base my project on experiments and ways to use a tool, the pointed nib pen as a starting point for ideas and concepts for designing the shapes and idiom of the characters. An important factor in this project was to do everything by hand. No computer. To practice and learn from repetition. The point of this self formulated assignment was not to have a finished typeface ready for use, but to have time to play and investigate in the first part of the process, where the ideas and concepts derive.

Problem Statement

"By investigating the word "expansion" in a type design context I wish to show variations of concepts for display typefaces that take a starting point in the idiom of the pointed nib pen."

Pointed nib pen
Practice in classical use of the pointed nib pen. Running and interrupted.

Process
pointed nib pen, brush and filt pen.

By not only applying pressure on downstrokes as the pointed nib pen traditionally does I wanted to try to test putting pressure on upstrokes, on curves and other untraditional places. It was a challenge because the aesthetics were not pleasing. I decided to move on in my process, as placing the pressure on random places made it hard to tell the characters apart from each other, and also gave a very uneven rhythm.

As the pointed nib pen and it´s references made it hard to steer away from the classical calligraphic traditional I decided to also use tools like filt pen and brush.

&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb6_900.jpg" width="900" height="636" width_o="900" height_o="636" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb6_o.jpg" data-mid="13724462"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb7_900.jpg" width="900" height="636" width_o="900" height_o="636" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb7_o.jpg" data-mid="13724468"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb8_900.jpg" width="900" height="636" width_o="900" height_o="636" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb8_o.jpg" data-mid="13724469"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb10_900.jpg" width="900" height="636" width_o="900" height_o="636" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb10_o.jpg" data-mid="13724478"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb11_900.jpg" width="900" height="636" width_o="900" height_o="636" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb11_o.jpg" data-mid="13724482"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb12_900.jpg" width="900" height="636" width_o="900" height_o="636" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/bachelorweb12_o.jpg" data-mid="13724486"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

A more structured way of sketching

From experiments and by trying and failing I chose to make three different concepts and try to visualise the idiom of the three typeface, still in rough sketches.

#1
Translation.working with the idiom of the pointed nib pen , but without using curves, swashes or other organic shapes. Remove the most recognizable and characteristic of a genre, but to maintain the expression. Using only geometric shapes and contrast /expansion in the stroke to design the characters.

&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept1_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept1_o.jpg" data-mid="13778002"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

#2

Work with some isolated strokes from pointed nib pen calligraphy, but without using a typical pointed nib pen alphabet. To obtain a new expression buy using classical strokes.

&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept2_4_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept2_4_o.jpg" data-mid="13778008"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept2_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept2_o.jpg" data-mid="13778009"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept2_2_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept2_2_o.jpg" data-mid="13778005"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept2_3_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept2_3_o.jpg" data-mid="13778006"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

#3

Working with the word "running" by drawing the characters in a continuous line without using the traditional copperplate or english roundhand alphabet. Using the expansion of the stroke to emphasize or exaggerate the calligraphic expression and the word "running"

&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_7_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_7_o.jpg" data-mid="13778023"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_8_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_8_o.jpg" data-mid="13778024"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_4_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_4_o.jpg" data-mid="13778016"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_1_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_1_o.jpg" data-mid="13778010"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_2_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_2_o.jpg" data-mid="13778011"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_5_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_5_o.jpg" data-mid="13778020"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_6_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_6_o.jpg" data-mid="13778021"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_3_900.jpg" width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699443/concept3_3_o.jpg" data-mid="13778014"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Process from Koncept #3

I deicided to refine some of the sketches from my third concept on exaggerating "running". The characters are designed with the idea that the pen should not leave the paper when writing the character.

		<description>After having ended a theoretical assignment about Typeface classification focusing og Robert Bringhurst´s "Elements of typographic style", Vox-ATypI and the British Standard Institution this school assignment was to design a typeface that would not fit or that was untraditional and hard to place in the existing typeface classification systems. I decided to work with a slab serif, with the starting point being that the Slab serif category is a very wide and open category that contains typefaces with all different kinds of idioms.
It is designed to be used as most traditional slab serifs as a display typeface. The idea was to start with a simple monoline skeleton and from experiments and tryouts find a design solution that would set it apart from a traditional slab serif.

The horisontal serifs give direction, and lead the eye while reading, without the interfearance of any vertical serifs

Sketching

The idea was to "turn" the serif around. Playing with the stroke of the different characters trying to not add a serif but to incorporate it as an extension of the character.

Branding, Visual Identity and Corporate Type Design

Part of this school assignment was to design a corporate typeface for the "Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation. By looking at Danish type tradition I wished to design a new typeface with a modern look for the new school merger, but still have some references to the Danish design tradition that is the heritage from the old school before the merger.

Inspiration
&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699425/engelhardt_900.jpg" width="900" height="636" width_o="900" height_o="636" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699425/engelhardt_o.jpg" data-mid="13693794"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
For inspiration i looked at the danish architect and book printer Knud V. Engelhardt's typefaces from the beginning of the 19th century. My idea was to connect the schools visual identity to the heritage of danish typeface design.

Logotype
&#60;img src="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699425/maerke_900.jpg" width="900" height="636" width_o="900" height_o="636" src_o="http://payload19.cargocollective.com/1/6/195463/2699425/maerke_o.jpg" data-mid="13694094"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
One of my first ideas was to create a logotype, but I decided that the typeface alone should carry the identity and not an isolated logo.

Sketching

I prefer working by hand in the beginning of the process to gain a better understanding of the shapes I am working with.
